How much does an accountant cost?

Your accountancy fee depends on your business type, turnover, monthly invoice volume and the services you need. Use our accountancy cost calculator below to estimate a monthly fee for a sole trader or limited company, then add bookkeeping, VAT returns or payroll to see how the estimate changes.

The calculator uses EPOS Accountancy’s fee formula. It is an estimate, not a binding quotation or a comparison of every accountant in the UK. We confirm the work included, any additional charges and applicable tax treatment in your quotation and engagement terms.

About your estimate

Count purchase and sales invoices together. One invoice counts as one transaction. Your selection represents 120 invoices per year.

The sliders cover £20,000–£1,000,000 annual turnover and up to 1,000 invoices per month. Outside these ranges, contact us for a tailored quote.

Monthly management accounts are £100 per month before client discount, or automatically included at no extra charge above £600,000 annual turnover. At exactly £600,000, the £100 charge applies if selected.

Estimate only. Your quotation confirms the scope, final fee and tax treatment. The client discount is subject to a £40 minimum monthly total.

These examples use the current calculator formula and show monthly estimates before the EPOS Bookings client discount. They do not represent a promise that every business with the same turnover needs the same work.

What is the cost of bookkeeping services?

In this calculator, adding bookkeeping increases the monthly estimate by annual turnover multiplied by 0.0005. For example, £50,000 turnover adds £25 per month. That is the bookkeeping addition to the accountancy estimate, not a standalone quotation for every bookkeeping engagement.

The amount of work can depend on transaction numbers, missing records, payment systems, how often records need updating and whether a backlog needs clearing. Tell us about these details when requesting a quote. Read more about our bookkeeping services.

How the accountancy calculator works

The accountancy base depends on business type, annual turnover and monthly invoice volume. Optional payroll, pensions, VAT and bookkeeping charges depend on annual turnover only. Monthly management accounts have a separate fixed fee or are included above the threshold.

The sole trader formula has a fee step at £50,000 turnover. The calculator does not decide whether you should register for VAT or choose a business structure. Those questions depend on your circumstances and need separate consideration.

Compare the work included, not just the price

When comparing accountancy services, ask who keeps the records up to date, which returns and accounts are included, how often you will receive reports and what happens if extra work is needed. A quote for annual accounts alone is different from an ongoing bookkeeping and management reporting engagement.

The calculator is a starting point for the services shown. Forecasting, CFO support, complex tax work and other requirements should be discussed separately so the deliverables are clear. Explore our accountancy services, payroll support and cash-flow services.

Accountancy fees: common questions

How much will accountancy services cost for my business?

Choose your business type, annual turnover and monthly invoice count in the calculator, then select the services required. It will show a monthly estimate and a breakdown. Contact us to confirm the scope, fee and any additional work before you engage us.

Does the estimate include bookkeeping?

Only when you select “Yes” for bookkeeping. The breakdown shows the bookkeeping addition separately, so you can compare the estimate with and without it.

Is the calculator a fixed quotation?

No. It uses the displayed formula to provide an estimate. Your quotation and engagement terms confirm which tasks are included, what you need to supply and the charges that apply.

What does an additional Self Assessment return cost?

The existing listed charge for a separate Self Assessment return outside the agreed scope is £150 per return. We confirm whether a separate return is needed and what is included in your quotation; additional income does not automatically mean every client needs the same work.

What if my turnover changes?

You can update turnover to see how the estimate changes. Any review or adjustment to your actual fee follows the terms agreed with you; changing a calculator input does not change an engagement.

Does selecting VAT returns add VAT to the fee?

No. It adds the estimated charge for preparing VAT returns. The tax treatment of our fees is confirmed in your quotation.

How much do monthly management accounts cost?

Select monthly management accounts to add £100 per month before any client discount. They are automatically included at no extra charge above £600,000 annual turnover. At exactly £600,000 they remain an optional £100 monthly service. Contact us to agree the reporting scope or discuss additional CFO support.
